What is included in a Small Business Logo Suite?

As a small business owner, you might ask yourself if you need a logo. While you can certainly get your small business off the ground without one, I hope at some point your business grows so that you need to stand out visually by more than just your business name.

Your logo is one visual expression of your small business. Your logo can communicate your vision, values, purpose, and offering in an instant!

Do you need a logo? Yes, I think you do.

Now, do you need just ONE logo? Is one logo enough?

With the variety of mediums used for marketing, from print marketing with business cards and flyers, to online marketing on your website and across social media, your logo will be everywhere. You should ask yourself,

“Will my logo fit in all of the places I need it to go?”

A Logo Suite addresses the variety of needs and begins with these four logos.

What is included in a Small Business Logo Suite?

1. Primary Logo

A Primary Logo is the main logo used to represent your small business.

This is the logo you fall in love with. Your Primary Logo should communicate, not only your business name, but your values and personality along with it.

Primary logos are usually horizontal, and can include a tagline, established dates, illustrations, icons, and locations.

2. Submark

A Submark is a version of your Primary Logo that is meant to fit in tight spaces. Think profile pic or keychain.

A Submark is usually round, and sometimes only contains the initials of your small business. In that case, your Submark might also be called a Lettermark.

3. Alternate Logo(s)

Your Alternate Logo is another variation of your Primary Logo.

Depending on the needs of your small business, an alternate logo can have a different layout and shape from your Primary Logo. Alternate Logos are often simplified or stacked versions of your Primary Logo.

Consider where you might use Alternate Logos and that will guide you toward the shape and style you need. A vertical logo is nice for pop-up signs, and an in-line logo is great for letterhead and social media image marking.

4. Favicon

This little guy is often overlooked, but it’s a detail not to miss. A favicon is a tiny recognizable image that is mainly used as the custom icon in any web browser when someone is visiting your website.

Does your small business website have a custom favicon?

A Favicon is one of many brand elements, like custom illustrations, monograms, and icons, that can round out your Logo Suite so that you have all of the images you need to make sure your small business brand is cohesive and stands out among the crowd.

How long did you wait after first establishing your small business to invest in a custom logo? Was it one of the first decisions you made, or are you still putting it off?

I had a great time developing the Logo Suite for Soma Massage and Tarot. I provided Melissa with high-fidelity vector files, which are scalable to any size so that they can be used online or in print anywhere without ever being pixelated or blurry.

It is my absolute pleasure to work with small business owners, especially in Seattle, and Soma is in the heart of historic Ballard. If you’re in Seattle, I hope you check out all Melissa has to offer.
